Root Canals

All teeth host one to four root canals which are; tiny passageways that spread from beneath the top of the tooth, making their way downward until they reach the tip of the root.

The inner chamber of the tooth which contains nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues is called the pulp. Many infections originate in this region. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also have similar affects. As infection worsens, the roots often become compromised as well.

Infected pulp creates a number of problems, beginning with pain and sensitivity. Also, small pockets of puss may develop which lead to abscesses, depending on the severity.

Root canal therapy has been found to be highly effective. It usually includes one to three visits, beginning with drilling a small hole in the top of the tooth down to the inner chamber. Infected tissue is removed, the chamber is cleansed and disinfected, and the canals are reshaped. Infection is therefore immediately terminated. The chamber and canals are then filled with elastic material and medicine for the prevention of infection. In some cases the hole in the tooth is filled temporarily until a seal is made with a crown.

This procedure is designed to salvage the remaining healthy portions of the tooth. In the past, the only remedy would have been extraction. Typically, patients do not experience pain or discomfort from a root canal procedure. The restored tooth is created to last nearly as long as the original and provides equal functionality.
