Toothaches

A broken, fractured, or displaced tooth will obviously cause a toothache. However, none of those issues are cause for alarm if action is quickly taken.

For a tooth that has been knocked out, place it back into the socket until a dentist is available. If the socket cannot be located, hold it by the crown, not the root, and deposit it into a glass of warm milk, saline, or the victim’s own saliva. Rinse the mouth thoroughly of any blood or debris. Place a cold cloth on the affected area while compressing it to reduce swelling. Contain the tooth in one of these solutions until the emergency room or dentist is reached.

For children with a loosened tooth from injury or an incoming secondary tooth, have the child bite down gently on an apple or piece of caramel. In some instances, the tooth will easily separate from the gum.

If a tooth is fractured, again rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water and place a cold pack on the affected region. Ibuprofen may be administered in order to reduce swelling. If the fracture is minor, the tooth may be salvaged by sanding, or by the dentist if the pulp has not been compromised.
